The Civil Division represents low income families and individuals who have problems involving housing (ex: eviction defense, foreclosure), bankruptcy (Chapter 7 only), municipal tickets (ex: retail theft, disorderly conduct, loitering), tax disputes with the IRS, disability (ex: SSI/SSD-I appeals), consumer law (ex: security deposits, repossessions, garnishments), civil rights (ex: rights of involuntarily confined patients, inmates, children in the child welfare system), elder law (ex: age 50+ public benefits/health care, advanced directives, basic estate planning).
Legal Aid also sends attorneys to community meeting places in convenient locations. Those sites are listed on the website. Intake hours Monday and Wednesday 1:30-3:30. No appointments but arrive early and bring any paperwork.
