The Charles E. Kubly Foundation is proud to partner with the Face It Foundation, Mental Health America of Wisconsin, and The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Helen Bader School of Social Welfare to bring you a timely and unique look at the issue of depression in men.

Depression impacts over 6 million men annually and it is the most commonly associated risk factor in the over 30,000 male suicides that occur each year in the United States. It is well established that men are far less likely than women to seek professional help and when they do, they frequently reject the use of antidepressants and psychotherapy, leaving the man, his support system, and professionals frustrated.

This program, which is intended for both the general community and mental health professionals, will utilize the experiences of 4 men who have experienced significant issues with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse issues, to talk about their journeys through the mental health system, informal and formal peer support, and other strategies they used in their recovery. In addition, time will be dedicated to speak to the unique issues of male depression and strategies to engage men with depression.

Community Panelists:

  • Jim Hill
  • Curtis Marshall
  • Ken Weidman

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify and describe the unique characteristics associated with male depression
  2. Participants will be able to describe the critical elements of Peer Support
  3. Participants will be able to identify and utilize local mental health resources
